2024 Emergency Response Guidebook Available Now

The 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) is now available from US DOT PHMSA's website.

The ERG provides critical information for hazmat transporters and first responders to use in the event of an incident or emergency in transit. PHMSA began distributing free copies of the 2024 ERG in February and plans to provide 1.8 million copies to firefighters and other emergency responders in the US this year.

Public safety agencies in all states, territories, and tribal entities can obtain a free copy of the 2024 ERG through their designated state management coordinators' offices.

The new guidebook includes some significant changes from the 2020 edition which PHMSA detailed in a Summary of Changes document. As noted at the top of that document, this is not the full list of changes and should not be used as a replacement of or supplement to the 2020 ERG.

What is the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)?

The ERG is a resource for detailed information about hazardous materials that emergency responders may need during an emergency incident release involving hazmat. Together with transportation authorities in Canada, Mexico, and South America, PHMSA updates the ERG every four years to help establish consistent emergency response procedures and improve safety.

PHMSA sought and received extensive stakeholder feedback while developing the 2024 ERG, which is available here as a free PDF or free mobile app.
