Who Needs DOT Training?
The U.S. DOT requires training for all hazmat employees who can have a direct affect on hazmat transportation safety. This includes people who:
- Purchase packaging for hazardous materials
- Package hazardous materials
- Put markings and labels on hazmat packages
- Type up shipping papers
- Load the packages onto vehicles
- Drive the vehicle
Training must always include general awareness, security awareness, and job-specific components.
Why Job-Specific?
It may be obvious from the list above that not all hazmat employees need the same training. For example, you wouldn't necessarily want to force a loading dock worker to learn how to buy hazmat packaging and type shipping papers. And you wouldn't want to teach a secretary who types shipping papers or a purchasing agent who buys hazmat packaging how to load a truck. That's why the DOT requires job-specific training.
A single, generic workshop may be appropriate for some hazmat employees. However, this may be too much training for some, wasting money and time. Some hazmat employees perform functions that require more detailed training to do their job properly.
Lion provides a variety of function-specific courses online to help you provide the appropriate training for all of your hazmat employees, maximizing your training budget and assuring compliance with the regulations.
