REACH is an intricate, costly, and mandated new Chemical Management Program now in effect in the European Union. REACH affects U.S. manufacturers, exporters, and businesses along the entire supply chain. The Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of CHemical substances program (REACH) began implementation on June 1, 2008.

REACH affects businesses dealing with chemicals or products containing chemicals, including those in the furniture, auto parts, electronics, paint, clothes, and detergents industries.

Non-chemical Manufacturers Are Also Affected by REACH

While REACH applies largely to chemical manufacturers, it also applies to a wide array of manufacturers of non-chemical products. This includes products or articles that:

• Release chemical substances during normal use
• Release chemical substances when disposed of
• Contain 0.1% by weight of “substances of very high concern”
