OSHA Joins the Centro Latino de Apoyo, Recursos y Oportunidades (CLARO) to Raise Safety and Health Awareness for Hispanic Employees—12/12/06
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Centro Latino de Apoyo, Recursos y Oportunidades (CLARO) in Marshall, Mo., have renewed their alliance, joining forces in providing information, guidance and access to training resources that will help protect Hispanic employees' safety and health.
OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. OSHA has created 447 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
"This cooperative effort is designed to achieve three goals which include training and education, outreach and communication and promoting the national agenda of raising public awareness of workplace safety and health, particularly among Hispanic workers," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA regional administrator in Kansas City.
Through this alliance, OSHA will continue to provide CLARO with training and education programs on employees' occupational safety and health rights and responsibilities, including OSHA's whistleblower or anti-discrimination provisions and safety and health issues faced by Hispanic employees. OSHA and CLARO also will continue to work jointly to deliver informational courses about hazards in industries such as meat processing where CLARO clients are commonly employed.
CLARO serves the Hispanic population in Saline, Pettis, Johnson, Lafayette, Carroll, Chariton, Howard, Cooper and other surrounding counties in central Missouri.
Outreach efforts to employees and employers will include safety and health conferences, seminars, workshops and Web site information for the local community.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
