EPA settles with Trilla Steel Drum on hazardous-waste violations—07/19/07
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with
Trilla Steel Drum Corp., 2959 W. 47th St., Chicago, on alleged violations
of federal hazardous waste regulations. The company will pay a $101,627 penalty.
Trilla manufactures stainless steel drums. In the process it generates waste
paint, which is temporarily stored for later transport, treatment and disposal
elsewhere. The company was cited for violating the federal Resource Conservation
and Recovery Act requirements for managing hazardous waste. Specifically,
EPA cited Trilla for unauthorized treatment of hazardous waste and failure
to determine if the waste was hazardous, and to keep containers closed. The
company also allegedly failed to institute a contingency plan, train personnel
and keep records. EPA regulates hazardous waste from production to final disposal.
Trilla is now in compliance with EPA regulations.
