PHMSA and OSHA to Hold Pre-UN Regulatory Meetings Next Week

To prepare for international regulatory meetings at the United Nations, both OSHA and the US DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will hold pre-UN meetings open to industry stakeholders and the public.

PHMSA Pre-UN Meeting on Hazmat/DG Shipping
On Tuesday, June 14, PHMSA will hold its pre-UN meeting to discuss hazardous materials transportation and prepare for the 49th session of the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN SCOE TDG).

Here’s what’s on the Agenda for PHMSA’s pre-UN meeting, according to the Federal Register announcement:
  • Explosive and related matters
  • Listing, classification, and packing of hazmat/dangerous goods
  • Electric storage system (i.e., lithium-ion and other batteries)
  • Transport of gases
  • Global harmonization of hazmat shipping regulations with the UN Model Regulations
  • Guiding principles for the UN Model Regulations
  • Cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • New proposals for amendments to the UN Model Regulations
  • Issues related to the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)
OSHA Pre-UN Meeting on GHS  
Also on June 14, OSHA will conduct its public meetings in preparation for the 31st session of the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). OSHA announced the public meeting in the Federal Register on May 26.
