Shipping Excepted Lithium Batteries

Course Code: HMT 252

Description
Lithium battery regulations are complex—but not all lithium batteries are subject to all of the regulations. Small lithium batteries—i.e., button cells, cell phone batteries, and others qualify for some relief when shipped in certain ways. Shippers must comply with specific packaging and labeling standards to ensure their lithium-ion or lithium-metal battery shipments will be accepted by ground, air, or vessel carriers.

Both the US DOT and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) require “adequate instruction” for employees who prepare excepted lithium batteries for transport.* Improperly prepared shipments can result in rejection, short-circuits or fires in transit, liability, and DOT fines now nearing $80,000 per day, per violation.

What is an excepted lithium battery?

The size and quantity of batteries or cells allowed in an excepted package varies based the Watt-hour rating of the batteries, the battery chemistry (ion or metal), and the mode of transport used.  For more information about which batteries are excepted, enroll in the course or see 49 CFR 173.185(c)(1) and (c)(4).
