Who's Responsible for Training Temp Workers on GHS?
The work may be temporary, but the effects of an employee getting hurt or sick on the job can last a lifetime. OSHA’s safety standards for industry put the onus of ensuring worker safety on the employer. For temporary workers, this raises a unique question—who, exactly, “employs” these workers? Is it the staffing agency or the host business? And who is responsible for training temporary workers on safety issues like GHS hazard communication?

More Hazardous Waste Training Needed at Sacramento City Facilities, Judge Says
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), in cooperation with the Yolo County Environmental Health Department and the California D.A.’s office reached a settlement with the California city of West Sacramento to improve handling of hazardous waste at city-operated facilities.

Takata Airbag Recall Expands (Again)
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has traced the ongoing safety defect in Takata brand airbags back to moisture and temperature variations that may, over time, degrade the propellant used in these safety devices. Now that NHTSA has traced the defect back to a root cause, Federal regulators will require Takata to recall between 35 and 40 million more airbag inflators.

Coast Guard Declares Equivalency With SOLAS Container Weight Rules
Last year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amended the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations to require that vessel shippers verify container gross mass for all vessel shipments before they can be loaded onto a ship.

Derailed Train Spills Hazmat Near D.C.
A tanker carrying sodium hydroxide derailed along with several other cars near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station in Washington D.C. over the weekend. About half of the sodium hydroxide is thought to have been released onto the rail bed and the ground.

For allegedly generating and storing hazardous waste without a permit, a New York–based rail car manufacturer will pay $71,120 and come into compliance with the US EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste law.
