Who Needs DOT Hazmat Training?
US DOT requires hazmat training for all “hazmat employees,” defined in the HMR as anyone whose actions can directly affect the safe transportation of hazardous materials (49 CFR 171.8).
For new hazmat employees, DOT requires training within 90 days of hire or assignment. Recurrent hazmat training is required at least once every three years (49 CFR 172.704).

Home to the NBA’s Hornets, Charlotte is a fabulous city to visit to attend hazmat training. When British General Cornwallis marched on Charlotte during the American Revolution, his army was met by strong opposition from the locals and retreated in short order. It led Cornwallis to call Charlotte a “hornet’s nest of rebellion.”
You know what really stings?
Financial penalties for noncompliance with domestic or international hazmat regulations.
Failure to provide hazmat training for employees can subject your site to a minimum
civil penalty of $508 per employee, per day. DOT recently increased civil penalties for typical hazmat shipping violations to a maximum of $84,425 per day, per violation.
Violations that result in severe injury, death, or substantial property damage are even more expensive.
