PHMSA Issues 2 Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Advisories

Posted on 9/29/2020 by Roger Marks

On September 29, DOT PHMSA issued two hazardous materials safety advisories for owners and operators of natural gas distribution pipelines.

Advisory on Overpressure Protection on Low Pressure Systems

This DOT PHMSA advisory bulletin reminds owners and operators of natural gas distribution pipelines that low-pressure distribution systems may fail due to over pressurization.

The advisory cites a series of structure fires and explosions that occurred in September 2018 when high-pressure natural gas entered a low-pressure distribution system that serves customers in Massachusetts. At least one person died and 131 structures were damaged in the incident, including five homes.

Advisory on Inside Meters and Regulators

The other hazmat safety advisory PHMSA issued alerts owners of natural gas pipelines to the consequences of failures of inside meters and regulators.

The advisory bulletin also reminds operators about existing Federal regulations that cover installation and maintenance of inside meters and regulators.
