Summer Safety: Respirable Silica Worker Protections

As road repair and construction projects kick into high gear for summer, so does workers’ risk of exposure to breathable silica dust. Workers can be exposed to silica during abrasive blasting work, stonecutting, rock drilling, or the manufacturing of bricks, cement, and asphalt. Silica is also used in adhesives, paints, soaps, and glass.

OSHA Rescinds Electronic Reporting Requirement for Form 300 and 301 Injury Data

OSHA has finalized a rulemaking to rescind the requirement for employers with 250 or more employees to electronically report injury and illness data from OSHA Forms 300 and 301. Electronic submission of data from OSHA Form 300A will still be required.

OSHA Raises Penalties for Safety Violations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will soon raise civil penalties for work safety violations to keep pace with inflation. The Department of Labor will announce the increase in a forthcoming Final Rule.

Work in Permit-controlled Confined Spaces on the Rise

OSHA says that the number of establishments with permit-controlled confined spaces has risen by about 5,000, to a total of 210,281. The number of employees who enter these spaces is rising, too.

Now in Effect: New OSHA Crystalline Silica Construction Standard

OSHA’s revised Standard for respirable crystalline silica in the construction sector took effect on September 23, 2017. OSHA updated its permissible exposure limits (PELs) for crystalline silica, found at 29 CFR 1926.1153, in a Final Rule promulgated in March 2016.

OSHA May Revoke Some Parts of Its Beryllium Final Rule

OSHA this week proposed revoking the “ancillary provisions” for the construction and shipyard sectors adopted in a January 2017 Final Rule to revise the beryllium workplace exposure standard. OSHA will not revoke the new, lower permissible exposure limits (PELs) for beryllium and beryllium compounds.
