DOT Announces Million Dollar Hazmat Grant Program

Posted on 6/16/2016 by Roger Marks

The US DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced on Friday the availability of $1 million in grant funding to support hazmat emergency response training in the US. Created under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act), the grant money is earmarked for safety training for hazardous materials professionals or hazmat training for Federal and State enforcement personnel.

Like most hazardous materials transportation grants, the $1 million program is funded largely through registration fees collected from hazmat shippers and carriers on an annual basis. Learn more about hazmat registration fees here, including who must register with DOT in order to ship or transport hazardous materials. These fees are typically due on June 30 of each year.

Hazmat Training in Detroit, Cincinnati, and Columbus

US DOT made major updates to the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) this month, and the revised rules take effect on July 5. The 49 CFR hazmat shipping requirements change constantly, and signing shipping papers without current training is a major liability. Be confident you know what it takes to keep your shipments in compliance with the latest rules; spot red flags; and avoid fines up to $75,000 per day, per violation.

Don’t miss the Hazardous Materials Transportation Certification Workshop when it comes to Detroit on June 20–21, Cincinnati on June 21–22, and Columbus on June 27–28. Meet DOT’s three-year training requirement for ALL hazmat employees and learn new and changing rules you must know to maintain compliance.
