US EPA Releases Draft Risk Evaluation for TBBPA

Posted on 6/17/2026 by Lion Technology Inc.

US EPA recently released its draft risk evaluation of environmental and health risks posed by the chemical 4,4'-(1-Methylethylidene)bis[2, 6-dibromophenol] (aka TBBPA) as required under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). TBBPA is used as a flame retardant in a wide array of commercial and consumer products.

In the draft risk evaluation, EPA found that the chemical poses “unreasonable risk to workers driven by inhalation exposure (three conditions of use) and unreasonable risk to the environment driven by to releases to surface water during certain processing and disposal activities (two conditions of uses).”

Comments on the draft risk evaluation are due August 17, 2026, about two months after the notice was published in the Federal Register. More information can be found on the Agency’s website.
