CSB Issues Safety Alert for Texas Petrochemical Facilities

In the wake of devastating flooding and disruption of industrial operations caused by Hurricane Harvey, the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has issued a Safety Alert for petrochemical facilities in Texas that will restart operations in the coming weeks and months. Starting up complex processes at these facilities poses distinct hazards even under “normal” conditions, and even more so in the aftermath of severe weather.

The Safety Alert provides reminders of established startup safety procedures and checklists facility managers can use to ensure safe, uneventful start-up of operations.

What is the CSB?

Established by statute in 1990 under amendments to the Clean Air Act, the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is an independent Federal agency charged with investigating chemical accidents and hazards at industrial facilities. CSB operates under the direct supervision of the President and Congress, and reports annually on its activities.
