Shippers Beware: Scammers Using IATA Name to Extort Payment

Posted on 7/21/2017 by Roger Marks

A word of caution to hazmat air shippers, air carriers, and travel agents: Lion Technology has been made aware that scammers posing as representatives of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) are attempting to use the IATA name and letterhead to extort payments from businesses and individuals.

IATA-DGR.JPGShippers and others worldwide are now receiving suspicious emails and phone calls—sometimes explicitly threatening jail time—in an attempt to secure payment on fraudulent invoices. Fraudsters at times even use fake social media accounts or the identities of real IATA personnel to lend credence to their false claims.

IATA has set up a dedicated web page at IATA.org to help stakeholders combat fraud and abuse from scammers. The page includes a full list of known fraudulent email addresses and domain names used to further these schemes. These emails may be “spoofed”—meaning they appear to be from the bona-fide IATA.org domain, when in fact they are not.

IATA urges those who receive suspicious messages to report fraud to information.security@iata.org.
