COVID-19 Training Standards for Washington Employers

Posted on 7/25/2020 by Lauren Scott

To help employers re-open businesses safely and protect the safety and health of employees, Lion News staff is reviewing standards for COVID-19 preparedness, workplace controls, and employee training on a state-by-state basis.

To learn more, view our list of states with COVID-19 programs in place.

As part of its Safe Start Washington phased reopening guidelines, the State of Washington is requiring employers to provide COVID-19 training to educate and inform workers.

According to the state's guidelines, workers must be trained in the language “they understand best about coronavirus and how to prevent transmission, and the employer’s COVID-19 policies.”

Employee COVID-19 safety training should include (but not be limited to):
  • Physical distancing best practices and what to when physical distancing is not feasible;
  • Hand washing and PPE (such as gloves) etiquette;
  • How to clean and sanitize the workplace;
  • Health screening protocols;
  • Policies on face coverings;
  • What to do if experiencing signs/symptoms related to COVID-19; and
  • Any additional health and safety requirements developed specifically for the business’s industry.
Read the complete Safe Start Washington phased reopening guidelines here.

Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to review the Washington State COVID-19 Response “New Normal” planning checklist as an introductory resource for how to safely reopen businesses.

COVID-19 Safety Training for Employees

Lion launched the COVID-19 Employee Safety Awareness Online Course to help US workplaces protect employee health and safety during the current public health crisis. As facilities nationwide return to action, it is crucial that employees know how to protect themselves and their co-workers from exposure to COVID-19.

The course will help satisfy your state's COVID-19 training mandates and prepare employees to:
  • Recognize signs, symptoms, and risk factors for COVID-19
  • Describe how the COVID-19 disease is transmitted
  • Follow recommended hygiene and work protocols to prevent exposure
  •  Properly use and care for PPE and face coverings, when required
