Hazmat Responders Can Submit Feedback for ERG 2024

Posted on 10/13/2022 by Roger Marks

In its latest quarterly newsletter for hazardous materials stakeholders, US DOT PHMSA invites emergency responders to submit feedback about the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG). Comments submitted will be reviewed in 2023 and help PHMSA as they work to develop the next edition of the guidebook, the ERG 2024.

Comments can be e-mailed to ERGComments@dot.gov and should include the responders name, organization, and contact information.

Important: iPhone Users with the ERG App

Users of the ERG 2020 Mobile Application on an iPhone or other Apple device may need to download PHMSA’s version of the app, called “ERG for iOS,” to continue using it. The application published by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is no longer supported as of September 30, 2022.

The PHMSA version of the app can be downloaded here.

The ERG is also available for free online as a PDF file in English, Spanish, and French, and as a mobile application for Android devices.

What is the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)?

Published every four years, the ERG is a critical resource for hazardous materials transporters and emergency responders.

The book provides guidance and information to help firefighters, law enforcement, rescue squads, and others respond properly and safely to hazardous materials releases.

PHMSA compiles the ERG in a joint effort with transport authorities in Canada, Mexico, and South America. To date, US DOT has distributed more than 16 million free copies of the ERG to emergency response organizations.

Online Training: How to Use the ERG

The Using the Emergency Response Guidebook Online Course provides a basic understanding of the purpose of the ERG and how to use it to identify hazardous materials and find information about specific chemicals when needed. The course includes notes on important changes made to the latest edition of the ERG (2020).

HAZWOPER Training for Emergency Responders

Under its Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Standard, OSHA requires training for every level of emergency responder—from awareness level to the incident commander.

Lion offers online courses to help satisfy initial and refresher training requirements for emergency responders outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6) and (q)(8).

This graphic guide outlines the training requirements that apply to responders at the awareness level (FRA), operations level (FRO), technician level, specialist level, and incident commander level.

Lion's training was by far the best online RCRA training I've ever taken. It was challenging and the layout was great!

Lion was very extensive. There was a lot of things that were covered that were actually pertaining to what I do and work with. Great Job. I will be coming back in three years!
