49 CFR Hazmat Update: Emergency Response Phone Numbers

Last week, US DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) posted a long list of major (and not-so-major) changes to the 49 CFR hazmat shipping rules. Among these changes was an important update regarding the emergency response phone number shippers must provide on the shipping papers for most hazmat shipments.

Final Rule: PHMSA Restricts E-Cigs on Airplanes

The US DOT posted a Final Rule to today’s Federal Register to prohibit electronic smoking devices (“vape pens,” e-cigs, e-hookahs, e-pipes, etc.) in checked baggage aboard an airplane. The Rule also prohibits charging e-cigs while on a plane. Electronic “smoking” or “vaping” devices will still be allowed in carry-on baggage.

How to Find Watt-hour Rating of Lithium-ion Batteries

In new standards for shipping lithium batteries that took effect on August 7, 2015, US DOT updated the accepted method for expressing the power of a lithium-ion battery. Before August 7, 2015, shippers in the US measured the power of lithium batteries by “equivalent lithium content.” Under the current rules, battery power must be expressed in watt-hours.
