EPA Announces Enforcement Initiatives for Next 3 Years

Posted on 2/22/2016 by Roger Marks

Earlier this month, US EPA announced its National Enforcement Initiatives (NEIs) for fiscal years 2017–2019. Every three years, EPA sets these initiatives in order to reinforce the work the Agency does to regulate the release of pollutants into the environment. The NEIs reflect areas of environmental regulation where there is significant non-compliance with the law.

EPA environmental inspection priorities

The list for 2017–2019 includes some holdovers from EPA’s 2014–2016 NEIs, as well as a couple of number of new and expanded initiatives. Without further ado, here is the list of National Enforcement Initiatives for 2017–2019:

1. Keeping Industrial Pollutants Out of the Nation’s Waters (new initiative)
2. Reducing Risks of Accidental Releases at Industrial and Chemical Facilities (new initiative)
3. Cutting Hazardous Air Pollutants (expanded initiative)
4. Reducing Air Pollution from the Largest Sources
5. Ensuring Energy Extraction Activities Comply With Environmental Laws
6. Keeping Raw Sewage and Contaminated Stormwater Out of the Nation’s Waters
7. Preventing Animal Waste from Contaminating Surface and Groundwater

Facilities should keep these enforcement initiatives in mind, as the NEIs may influence the way EPA compliance officers carry out inspections in the coming years.
