2017 EPA Enforcement Results By the Numbers

Today, we’ll take a by-the-numbers look at how EPA enforced environmental laws in 2017 and compare these results to EPA’s FY 2016 enforcement report.

The number of environmental compliance inspections performed by EPA inspectors.
Year-over-year change: -13% (13,500 inspections in FY 2016)


The value of injunctive relief spent to resolve alleged violations of EPA regulations.
Year-over-year change: +32% ($13.7 billion in injunctive relief in FY 2016)


The total number of Administrative Civil Penalty Orders issued by EPA
Year-over-year change: -12% (1,372 Orders in FY 2016)


Total amount of administrative and judicial penalties assessed by EPA
Year-over-year change: -66% ($6 billion in FY 2016)*

*The value of administrative penalties can fluctuate year-by-year due to extremely large penalties in some years for highly-publicized violations—e.g. major oil spills, CERCLA settlements, and the like.


Criminals sentenced for environmental crimes
Year-over-year change: -25% (184 criminals sentenced in FY 2016)


Years in jail for environmental criminals
Year-over-year change: +64% (93 years of jail time in FY 2016)



Amount committed to clean up Superfund sites around the US.
Year-over-year change: +20% ($1 billion committed in FY 2016)
