COSTHA to Host 3rd Working Group on Lithium Batteries

Posted on 1/27/2016 by Roger Marks

In Bordeaux, France on March 30-April 1, 2016, the Council for the Safe Transport of Hazardous Articles (COSTHA), in cooperation with battery industry groups RECHARGE and the Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA), will host its third UN Informal Working Group on lithium batteries.

The working group follows the finalization of new UN requirements for lithium battery air shipments incorporated into the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, or DGR, in an Addendum published last week.

The working group will convene to discuss major concerns facing battery manufacturers and shippers. Among these big issues: requirements for shipping damaged or defective lithium batteries, proposed changes to the UN’s battery testing criteria, shipping lithium batteries in equipment (SP 188), crucial regulatory definitions, and more.
