NY Wipes Manufacturer to Pay $200K in OSHA Violations

Posted on 7/31/2020 by Lauren Scott

Multiple facilities on Long Island, NY that manufacture wipes used to make home and personal care products has been cited by OSHA after an employee allegedly suffered a hand amputation in a fabric-softener sheet-cutting machine.

In July 2019, OSHA issued multiple alleged safety violations at the company’s Hauppauge and Brentwood, New York, facilities. These include failure to train and evaluate forklift operators, lack of machine guards, and failing to report an amputation to OSHA. OSHA also found potential for fire and smoke inhalation hazards due to obstructed exit routes and an inoperable exit door.

More recently, the company has reached an agreement with the workplace safety agency to pay a penalty of $200,000. The wipes manufacturer also agreed to take steps to improve safety at its five New York facilities, three in Brentwood and one each in Hauppauge and Commack.

These safety measures include providing forklift training and reevaluating the forklift program at least twice per year. The company will hire an independent consultant to examine the structural integrity of racks and distribute policies and procedures for safe storage and stacking.

Forklift Safety: A Most-Cited OSHA Safety Hazard

There’s a reason powered industrial truck (PIT) regulations are among OSHA’s most-cited safety violations year after year. Failure to properly train, certify, and re-certify PIT drivers are typically the most common reasons employers are cited under OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.178 Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks.

Lion’s Forklift Safety online training can help ensure your staff receives the required training to safely operate PITs, or forklifts. The online format allows workers to start, pause, and complete the course at their own pace. You can easily track their progress and support is available 7 days a week, so workers can get the most out of their training.
