Ohio Nitric Oxide Release: US CSB Opens Investigation

Posted on 6/16/2025 by Lion Technology Inc.

The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) opened an investigation into a release of nitric acid and nitrogen oxide gas that occurred June 11, 2025, at an explosives manufacturing plant in Ohio.

State officials say the releases occurred after “an unknown contaminant” entered a 5,000-gallon tank containing nitric acid, causing a chemical reaction that caused the release of nitrogen oxide gas.

A large plume of gas covered the facility and surrounding area. Officials ordered residents within three miles of the facility to evacuate, as well as hundreds in a nearby community. FAA temporarily restricted flights for a 30-nautical-mile radius around the facility.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 AM and officials lifted evacuation orders at about 4:30 PM.
