Quick Quiz: Who's a "Hazmat Employee"?

Posted on 5/31/2023 by Lion Technology Inc.

Late last year, US DOT PHMSA published a letter of interpretation (LOI) in response to a stakeholder’s request for clarification about the definition of a “hazmat employee” in 49 CFR 171.8.

To comply with the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), shippers absolutely must know which of their employees are "hazmat employees"—who must be trained and re-trained at least every three years. In the interpretation letter, PHMSA addresses four specific shipping-related job tasks and explains whether the HMR covers employees who perform those tasks.

Video: Who Needs DOT Hazmat Training?

Check out the video below for details about US DOT's hazmat employee training requirements found in 49 CFR 172.704.

Be confident that every "hazmat employee" at your facility has the required training to ensure that every step of the hazmat transportation process is done safely and in full compliance with 49 CFR.

The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) require training for all hazmat employees within 90 days of hire date or job assignment. Employees must work under supervision until training is complete. Recurrent training is required at least once every three years [49 CFR 172.704(c)].
