CSB Investigates Illinois Chemical Factory Explosion

[UPDATE 06/22/21] CSB deployed two members of its leadership team to the explosion site on June 21. At the site, they met with company respresentatives, on-site Federal and local emergency responders, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff, and Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) investigators to discuss the incident further.

According to CSB, the facility was conducting its alkyd resin manufacturing process during the early morning hours of April 8 when an accidental release occurred at about 12:02 am.

Beirut Explosion Strikes Similarities to 2013 West, TX Incident, Says CSB

Last week, the Chairman of the US Chemical Safety and Hazardous Investigation Board (CSB) released a statement reflecting that the massive chemical explosion in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4 may have similar characteristics to the West Fertilizer Plant Explosion of 2013.

Final Rule Alert: CSB Chemical Accident Reporting Rule

Update: CSB's Final Rule on reporting accidental releases takes effect on March 23, 2020. The new regulation requires owners or operators of chemical facilities to report on accidental releases.
