EPA Raises Penalties for Environmental Violations (Again)

US EPA last week again raised the civil penalties for violations of environmental compliance programs to keep pace with inflation.

$85,000 Settlement for RCRA Violations at PA Chemical Co.

For alleged violations of US EPA’s rules for managing hazardous waste and oil, a Reading, PA chemical distribution plant will pay a $55,000 civil penalty and furnish a local fire department with $30,000 worth of emergency response equipment.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a $56,000 civil penalty against a Wisconsin university for hazmat violations after the TSA found “highly flammable” research-grade alcohol and corrosive epoxy resin in a student researcher’s baggage at the airport.

In a February 11 press release, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a proposed $455,000 civil penalty against a freight carrier for alleged violations of hazardous materials shipping regulations.

Stormwater Violations Cost Manufacturer $145,000

A Fairbury, NE manufacturing facility will pay $145,000 to resolve alleged violations of the US EPA’s Clean Water Act, according to a press release from EPA Region 7. The violations stem from stormwater discharge of cadmium, cooper, lead, nickel, and zinc in excess of permit limits.

A Newport, WA plastics and composites production plant where a July 2015 explosion injured seventeen workers has been cited for willful and serious violations of OSHA’s work safety standards.
