$85,000 Settlement for RCRA Violations at PA Chemical Co.

Posted on 3/30/2016 by Roger Marks

For alleged violations of US EPA’s rules for managing hazardous waste and oil, a Reading, PA chemical distribution plant will pay a $55,000 civil penalty and furnish a local fire department with $30,000 worth of emergency response equipment.

EPA alleges that the chemical shipping plant violated environmental rules when it failed to store hazardous waste in line with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) standards. Among the violations cited by US EPA:

  • Failure to conduct proper and timely inspections
  • Failure to adequately control emissions of volatile waste
  • Failure to plan for oil spill prevention
The materials involved in the RCRA violations were solvents created when the company cleaned chemical containers and tanks and oil and chemical products stored for distribution.
