NJ Watershed Ambassadors Celebrate AmeriCorps Week

Posted on 4/8/2019 by Lauren Scott

Last month, the New Jersey AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors Program celebrated national AmeriCorps week with events throughout the state to educate the public about environmental stewardship.

From March 10 to March 16, Watershed Ambassadors rallied AmeriCorps alumni and members of the public to transform their community through cleanups, plantings, workshops, and more. Volunteers successfully carried out half a dozen programs with the goal of educating the public on water quality issues and encouraging citizens to play an active role within their community.

The week kicked off with an alumni celebration in Trenton on March 11, leading into decorating workshops, grass plantings, and much more. Participants gathered in classrooms and community centers to learn about the lasting impact of littering. Volunteers took to the streams and rivers to clean up NJ waterways. There were even rain barrel workshops in various parts of the state to educate the public on the effects of rainwater in and around homes.

The NJ AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassadors Program is now in its 19th year, engages ambassadors with each of the state’s 20 watershed management areas to raise awareness of water quality and watershed issues.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), defines a watershed as, “the area of land that drains into a body of water such as a river, lake, stream, or bay.” This also encompasses the entire land area that drains to the waterway. The DEP has divided NJ’s watersheds into twenty watershed management areas, with restoration efforts and characteristics specific to each.

AmeriCorps began in the early 1990s as a national service initiative that encourages US citizens to address a variety of issues, such as education, disaster relief, environmental stewardship, poverty, and more. Currently, there are over 80,000 volunteers in the program nationwide serving 21,000 locations throughout the US.
