21 Superfund Sites to See Immediate, Intense Cleanup Action

Posted on 12/11/2017 by Roger Marks

superfund-sign.jpgIn response to recommendations from the Superfund Task Force issued this summer, US EPA has released a list of 21 Superfund sites targeted for immediate, intense cleanup action.

The task force will now develop plans to address each of the sites named on the list and report to Administrator Scott Pruitt on their progress. While no additional funds will be provided to facilitate or speed up the cleanup process, prioritizing these 21 Superfund sites will serve to “spur action at sites where opportunities exist to act quickly and comprehensively.”

See the EPA memo detailing all the Superfund Task Force recommendations.

3 New Jersey Superfund Sites Make the List

The list includes three New Jersey Superfund sites—the American Cyanamid Company site in Bound Brook, the Diamond Alkali Company site in Newark, and the Barry’s Creek area in Wood Ridge Borough.

hazwoper_blog_1.jpgSuperfund sites in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Montana, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington also made the list.

Some of the sites set for immediate, intense action are already on EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL), while others are in various stages of proposal for inclusion. To see how Superfund sites are added or removed from the NPL, read: How Do Sites Get On or Off the Superfund List?

EPA added seven new Superfund sites to the NPL in August 2017.
