Oil Field Explosion Injures Three Workers, $467K in Penalties Issued
OSHA issued citations to two energy companies following an explosion on November 4, 2021, at an oil drilling site near Grassy Butte, ND that left one worker permanently disabled and two severely injured. Workers were assembling a blasting cap on a perforating gun when the perforating gun detonated, releasing shrapnel and other debris.

US Department of Justice Creates Office of Environmental Justice
On May 5, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced plans to create an Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) within the Department of Justice (DOJ) to oversee and help guide the department’s environmental justice efforts in partnership with EPA.

PHMSA Hazmat Enforcement Discretion on Packaging Tape
US DOT PHMSA announced a policy of enforcement discretion on May 2 for shippers who close a hazardous materials package with an adhesive tape other than the tape called for in the package manufacturer’s closure instructions.

OSHA Recommends Safety Improvements After Warehouse Collapse
On April 26, OSHA issued a letter to an online retailer asking the company to improve its emergency severe weather procedures following a warehouse collapse in Edwardsville, IL. After a Category 3 tornado struck the company warehouse on December 10, 2021, six contractors suffered fatal injuries and another was critically wounded.
