Shipping Automotive Airbags and Other Safety Devices

Course Code: HMT 256

Description
When shipped in the US, airbags and other safety devices (e.g., seatbelt pretensioners) are regulated under US DOT’s 49 CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). For auto manufacturers, dealers, and service centers, shipping these hazmat auto parts without proper packaging, labels, documentation, or training can result in fines as high as $79,976 per day, per violation.

US DOT requires all employees involved in preparing and offering airbags and other safety devices to complete hazmat training once every 3 years (49 CFR 172.704). This online course focuses on specific auto parts to give managers and employees a clear view of the rules that impact their shipments. Personnel who complete this course will be prepared to offer airbags and safety devices for transport by ground (49 CFR) or air (IATA DGR) .
