New Course: Shipping Hazmat by Ground–Driver

Posted on 12/9/2019 by Roger Marks

Hazmat training is not a one-size-fits-all exercise.

To provide effective hazmat training that covers what employees need to know to do their part for shipping compliance, Lion offers courses geared toward specific job functions.

This week, Lion added another course to our hazmat training catalog: Shipping Hazmat by Ground—Driver

The Shipping Hazmat by Ground—Driver (Course Code: CAR 200) online course prepares employees to safely and properly accept and transport hazardous materials in a motor vehicle. The course is designed to help employers meet DOT training mandates for hazmat employees by providing general awareness, security awareness, and function-specific training as required by DOT’s Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

US DOT requires all hazmat employees to complete training within 90 days of hire. Hazmat employees must work under supervision until trained. Training must be repeated in full once every three years (49 CFR 172.704).

The new course guides employees through what hazmat drivers must know to accept and transport hazardous materials safely and in compliance with the 49 CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

The course prepares drivers to:

  • Accept hazardous materials for ground transportation
  • Verify adequate packaging
  • Confirm proper hazmat labeling and marking
  • Select and display the correct hazmat placards
  • Load, unload, and secure hazardous materials in a motor vehicle
  • Segregating and separating hazardous materials when required
  • Driving and parking hazmat motor vehicles in compliance with PHMSA and FMCSA requirements
  • Recognize and respond to security threats
The new course has a runtime of about 5 hours, and can be accessed on a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile device. Professionals who complete this course can earn 0.50 CEUs and receive six months of free Lion Membership for compliance support.

Note on Hazmat CDL Requirements

While this course may be helpful to drivers seeking a hazardous materials endorsement on a commercial driver’s license (CDL), it is not intended as a prep-course for any specific hazardous materials or CDL exam.
