OSHA Issues Coronavirus Guidance for Specific Industries

Posted on 6/25/2020 by Lauren Scott

To ensure facilities and employees can return to work safely after COVID-19, OSHA issued a series of guidance memos tailored towards specific industries, such as manufacturing, meat processing, logistics, and construction.

Many of the recommendations overlap general guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as:
  • Practicing social distancing and maintaining 6 feet between coworkers, where possible.
  • Establishing flexible work hours (i.e., staggered shifts), if feasible.
  • Training workers on how to properly put on, use/wear, take off, and maintain protective clothing and equipment.
  • Allowing workers to wear masks over their nose and mouth.
  • Promoting personal hygiene. If workers do not have access to soap and water for handwashing, provide alcohol-based hand rubs containing at least 60 percent alcohol. Provide disinfectants and disposable towels workers can use to clean work surfaces.
Each of the following fact sheets details specific actions managers and workers can take to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Employers are encouraged to review the fact sheets, assess their facilities, and implement these actions as needed. In partnership with CDC, OSHA also released a toolkit for Meat & Poultry Processing facilities. This nine-page checklist helps managers and safety officers maintain productive, safe worksites for their food processing plant workers.
