PHMSA Requests Input on 2020 Emergency Response Guide

Posted on 5/23/2018 by Roger Marks

In the Federal Register on May 23, US DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) requested input from hazardous materials emergency responders regarding updates to the forthcoming 2020 edition of the Emergency Response Guide (ERG).

PHMSA wants input from emergency responders with experience using the ERG to respond to hazardous materials transport incidents. PHMSA estimates it will receive about 150 responses.

What Is the Emergency Response Guide (ERG)?

Published once every four years and known to some as the “little orange book,” the ERG is a critical resource for hazardous materials transporters and emergency responders. The book provides guidance and information to help firefighters, law enforcement, rescue squads, and others respond properly and safely to hazardous materials releases.erg-english-small.jpg

To date, PHMSA has distributed 14,500,000 free copies of the ERG to emergency service agencies. The ERG is also available for free online and as a free mobile application. PHMSA compiles the ERG in a joint effort with transport authorities in Canada, Mexico, and South America. The 2020 ERG, PHMSA says, will be published in English, Spanish, and French.
