EPA Raises Civil Penalties for Environmental Noncompliance
In the Federal Register today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted an Interim Final Rule to raise civil penalties for violations of environmental law and EPA regulations. Penalties are being raised to match inflation as mandated under the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 1990.6/30/2016
Brewery Fined $2.8 Million for Clean Water Act Violations
In a June 23 press release,US EPA announced a consent decree between EPA, the US Department of Justice, and a beer brewer that operates two large-scale breweries in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. According to the press release, the brewer allegedly violated the Clean Water Act by discharging industrial waste to municipal publicly owned treatment works (POTWs).6/29/2016
PHMSA Raises Hazmat Civil Penalties
In the Federal Register today, the US DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) posted an Interim Final Rule to raise the maximum and minimum civil penalties for violations of Federal hazardous materials regulations, law, special permits, and approvals.6/28/2016

In the June 28 Federal Register, US EPA posted a Final Rule to implement pretreatment standards for wastewaters sent from onshore unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extracting facilities to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW).6/28/2016
Repeat OSHA Violations Lead to Big Fine for Foundry
An OSHA workplace safety inspection uncovered multiple repeat violations of work safety requirements that will cost a Franklin, OH foundry $143,000 in penalties. According to OSHA, the company exposed employees to amputation, hearing loss, and respiratory hazards and failed to train employees on the hazardous chemicals used in the workplace as required under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).
