Clean Air Act, CERCLA, and EPCRA Fines for Food Processor
For alleged violations of multiple US environmental laws and regulations stemming from a release of anhydrous ammonia, a bakery and distribution company in Chelsea and Lawrence, MA will pay $156,000 in civil penalties. In addition to the fine, the company will furnish emergency response equipment to local emergency responders, at an estimated cost of $119,000.

CEO Convicted for Superfund Superfraud
The CEO of a Canadian environmental services company has been convicted of major fraud against the United States for orchestrating a kickback scheme that netted his firm “tens of millions of dollars in soil treatment and disposal contracts,” according to a Department of Justice press release.

Failure to Report Release Costs Texas Oil Company $400,000
For failing to notify the National Response Center (NRC) of a reportable discharge of a hazardous substance, a Houston-based oil and gas company will pay $400,000 to Federal and State environmental agencies and serve a two-year probation term.

EPA Hazardous Waste Office Changes Name
The US EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) has a new name. The office—which is responsible for implementing a number of EPA’s environmental programs—will from here on out be known as the Office of Land and Emergency Management (OLEM). Among the responsibilities of this office is the development of hazardous waste standards and regulations.

Tianjin Disaster: How Prepared is the US Chemical Industry?

Understanding Superfund Discovery and Remediation
On May 21, 2013, EPA announced the addition of 9 hazardous waste sites to the National Priorities List (NPL) and a proposal to add 9 more. This brings the total number of sites listed on the NPL to 1,685. According to EPA, 68% of those sites (1,145) have cleanup remedies in place....jpg)
