EPA Enforcement Roundup: Auto Parts Dealer to Pay $11 Million for RCRA Violations

In this week's EPA Enforcement Roundup, a nationwide auto parts retailer and two affilitated oil recyling facilities pay $11 million and $39,092 respectively for alleged RCRA violations. Plus, a chemical manufacturing company faces $492,000 in penalties for allegedly violating CERCLA, EPCRA, and Clean Air Act regulations.

EPA Enforcement Roundup: Week of 8/30

In this week's Roundup, a metal recycler will pay $500,000 to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations related to two facility explosions in 2020. Plus, a mineral facility agrees to serve five years probation and pay civil and criminal penalties after EPA and OSHA find the company allegedly exposed workers to arsenic hazards.

Stormwater Violations Cost Manufacturer $145,000

A Fairbury, NE manufacturing facility will pay $145,000 to resolve alleged violations of the US EPA’s Clean Water Act, according to a press release from EPA Region 7. The violations stem from stormwater discharge of cadmium, cooper, lead, nickel, and zinc in excess of permit limits.

$85,000 Settlement for RCRA Violations at PA Chemical Co.

For alleged violations of US EPA’s rules for managing hazardous waste and oil, a Reading, PA chemical distribution plant will pay a $55,000 civil penalty and furnish a local fire department with $30,000 worth of emergency response equipment.

Biodiesel Plant Settles EPA Noncompliance Allegations for $396,000

For violations of multiple major US EPA environmental laws, a Rhode Island biodiesel plant will pay a $396,000 fine.   

Furniture Retailer Agrees to Corporate-Wide, $1.75 Million OSHA Settlement

One of the nation’s largest furniture retailers has reached a corporate-wide settlement agreement for alleged violations of OSHA work safety regulations. As part of the agreement, the company will pay a $1,750,000 fine, abate workplace hazards, and train employees in line with the machine safety requirements at 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(7).  

Cruise Corporation Fined $20 Million for Alleged Pollution Violations

One of the largest cruise corporations in the world has reached a settlement with Federal prosecutors, agreeing to pay $20 million for illegally dumping plastics in the ocean near the Bahamas among other violations.

For alleged violations of multiple US environmental laws and regulations stemming from a release of anhydrous ammonia, a bakery and distribution company in Chelsea and Lawrence, MA will pay $156,000 in civil penalties. In addition to the fine, the company will furnish emergency response equipment to local emergency responders, at an estimated cost of $119,000.
