What's New in the IMDG Code for 2019?

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Roger Marks

IMDG_Code_299x314.jpgThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) this fall will publish a new edition of its International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code), the manual used by hazmat vessel shippers to ensure compliance with US and international hazardous materials/dangerous goods transport requirements.

IMO publishes the IMDG Code every two years, and voluntary compliance begins on January 1 following publication of the new edition. Mandatory compliance begins in the next even-numbered year. In other words, full compliance with the 2018 IMDG Code is voluntary as of January 1, 2019 and mandatory as of January 1, 2020.

Significant Changes to the IMDG Code for 2019

Vessel shippers should be prepared for “many changes” to the IMDG Code this year.
In addition to changes to vocabulary (the word “risk” now reads “hazard” and “risks,” “hazards”), IMO’s latest updates to the IMDG Code:

  • Overhaul corrosives classification in Chapter 2.8.
  • Add new entries to the Dangerous Goods List (DGL).
  • Code eighteen new segregation groups and add them to the DGL.
  • Clarify that shippers must use the “more applicable” Proper Shipping Name when multiple PSNs are under one UN number.
  • Expand Chapter 5.3 to cover bulk containers.
  • Update packing instructions and add a few new packing instructions.
See the full list of updates from IMO here.
