New Lithium Battery Air Rules Start Friday, 4/1

Changes to the requirements for shipping lithium batteries have come fast and furious in 2016, especially for air shippers. The latest update, posted February 8, reflects a recent ICAO Air Navigation Commission (ANC) recommendation that lithium-ion batteries prepared under Packing Instruction 965 (UN3480) be banned from carriage as cargo on passenger aircraft.

The Associated Press reports that on Wednesday, January 27, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) air navigation commission officially recommended an outright ban on rechargeable lithium batteries transported as cargo on passenger aircraft.
