FAA Fines Paint Shipper $63,000 for Hazmat Violations

Posted on 5/25/2017 by Roger Marks

An Arlington, Texas paint and coatings shipper has received a $63,000 citation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for alleged violations of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

According to FAA’s press release, the company shipped a box of flammable paint that failed to comply with the HMR in the following ways:

  • Lacked proper hazmat markings and labels
  • Was not packaged in the proper condition
  • Failed to include emergency response information

US DOT requires all “hazmat employees” to complete training on the requirements for shipping hazardous materials once every three years, per 49 CFR 172.704. Initial hazmat training must be completed within 90 days of starting work.

Companies that ship hazmat (a.k.a. “dangerous goods”) by air must comply with additional, more stringent restrictions.

Now that they’ve received the enforcement letter, the company has 30 days to respond to FAA.
