7 Hoverboard Brands Issue Recalls Over Lithium Batteries

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recalls of 7 brands of lithium-ion battery powered “hoverboards” or self-balancing scooters this week.

hoverboard.jpgThe recall impacts about 15,000 hoverboards, which CPSC says can pose a smoke, fire, or explosion hazard due to the potential for lithium-ion battery packs in the devices to overheat.

Lithium battery hazards have become something of a holiday tradition in the US—in December 2015 US DOT issued a transportation Safety Alert about hoverboards, and IATA issued a guidance document to help airlines understand the requirements for lithium batteries in passenger
