What’s Next in Lithium Battery Regulations?

Now that US DOT’s new hazmat shipping regulations for lithium batteries are in full effect, lithium battery manufacturers and shippers look toward an uncertain future. Lithium batteries pose unique hazards in transit, especially by air—if they short circuit during transportation, they can enter what’s called “thermal runaway”—when a battery short-circuits, causing rising temperatures that accelerate the cell’s chemical reaction rate. New FRA Final Rule for Securing Hazmat Trains

The US DOT Federal Rail Administration (FRA) has finalized a rule to prevent unattended trains that carry certain hazardous materials from “rolling away.”

The new rulemaking is part of US DOT’s effort to bolster the safety of hazmat trains, especially those carrying crude oil, in the wake of many train derailment incidents in the US and Canada that caused fires and explosions, destroyed property, and led to fatalities...
