Baltimore Steel Galvanizer to Pay $60K for Hazardous Waste Tank Violations

A steel galvanizer in Maryland will pay $60,000 to settle allegations it mismanaged a tank of hazardous waste at its Baltimore facility in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). According to US EPA, the facility’s violations centered on spent hydrochloric acid stored in a tank on site.

EPA Raises Civil Penalties for Environmental Noncompliance

In the Federal Register today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted an Interim Final Rule to raise civil penalties for violations of environmental law and EPA regulations. The former operator of a now-closed electroplating facility in Cedar Falls, IA has been indicted by a Federal grand jury on one count of unlawful storage of hazardous waste stemming from the discovery of drums of toxic and corrosive waste stored at the facility after it closed.

For allegedly generating and storing hazardous waste without a permit, a New York–based rail car manufacturer will pay $71,120 and come into compliance with the US EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste law.
