President Issues Executive Order to Slash Regulations

Posted on 1/30/2017 by Roger Marks

An Executive Order (EO) issued by the Office of the President on January 30, 2017 calls for a reduction in the number of Federal regulations impacting US businesses. Specifically, the executive order calls for two existing regulations to be repealed for each new regulation created.

In addition, the EO institutes an annual cap on the cost of new regulations. For fiscal year 2017, the “total incremental cost of all new regulations, including repealed regulations, to be finalized this year shall be no greater than zero.”

See the Executive Order here.

What’s Not Included?

The following types of regulations are not covered by the Executive Order:
  • Regulations issued with respect to a military, national security, or foreign affairs function in the US
  • Regulations related to agency organization, management, or personnel
  • Any other category of regulations exempted by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
The January 30 Executive Order is in addition to two previous orders that aim to reduce the regulatory burden on US businesses by "freezing" current rulemakings and "streamlining" the permit process for the manufacturing industry. Lion News reported on those orders last week when they became available to the public.
